    How to Use this Series

To gain access to this series researchers will need to know the approximate date that the matter they are interested in was dealt with at a council meeting.

    Function/Contents

This series consists of notice papers for all council meetings between at least 1848 and 1881, copies of proceedings of council meetings between 1842 and 1887 and attachments such as petitions, citizens rolls (to 1870), by-laws, bills and financial statements.

It is not known why the City of Melbourne included copies of the Proceedings and attachments in this series as they are duplicated in VPRS 8911 (Proceedings of Meetings of the Council). A notice paper is basically an agenda for council meetings listing the orders of the day, motions and any reports or statements to be presented to the meeting.

    System of Arrangement

This series is basically arranged chronologically according to the date of meeting.

The notice paper appears first, followed by the relevant copy of the proceedings. At the back of each volume are the attachments.

From 1869 onwards an index can be found at the front of each volume. This index covers matters found in the Proceedings only.

    Related Series

This series forms part of the council meetings record keeping system. It is related to:

VPRS 8910 Council Minutes, in which decisions made at meetings were recorded, and

VPRS 8911 Proceedings of the Council, which contains proceedings (not notice papers) subsequent to the end of this series.
