The "UHL" Index to Criminal Trial Briefs is an index compiled by a researcher prior to the transfer into custody of the P.R.O. of the Criminal Calenders.

    Notes on UHL Index

Until the most recent additions to the UHL index, or index to Criminal Trial Briefs, it has been spread over various institutions, each thinking that they had the whole index. The new index is the index reconstituted from SLV and from what was in Laverton Search Room, as well as typed manuscript.

The index comes in 13 sections, these are:

    1. 1814 - 1853 (A - Z)
    2. 1862 - 1864 (A - Z)
    3. 1862 - 1864 (A - Z)
    4. Chinese (A - Z)
    5. Alphabetical index of names of witnesses and others excluding those charged.
    6. Cases dealing with Aborigines.
    7. Chinese
    8. Police
    9. Soldiers
    10. Ships, Captains and Crews
    11. Stations
    12. Place Names
    13. Transporters to Tasmania
    14. (Not on Microfilm) Index of Ships and Shipping in connection with Supreme Court Records (Criminal Trial Briefs).

There are basically two parts to the index. the first, compulsory sections 1 - 4 are an index of those persons charged in the Criminal Trial Briefs.

Sections 5 to 13 are an index, by subject-ordered alphabetically, of witnesses and others excluding those charged. Some original sections that Jean Uhl had indexed have been interfiled by SLV as there has been no cross indexing don and often one entry could be placed in any one of 3 or more categories.

The numbers on the cards are designed to indicate various details.

NCR - Not in Criminal Record Book e.g. Smith, John
