The Catalogue of Crown Lands and Survey Files covers about 2/3 of Lands files held at the Public Record Office. For a list of relevant record series see 16 Related Controlling or Controlled Series. The catalogue was compiled by listing each file individually and computer-sorting the list into firstly Parish/Town order and secondly into file number order. This list is the Parish/Town order compilation. For a list of files sorted according to file number, see VPRS 7311 catalogue of Crown Lands and Survey Files : File Number Order.
Each line in the catalogue represents one file. (Where a file relates to more than one piece of land, it may be represented by more than one line in the catalogue). Information about each file has been recorded under the following column headings:
P.R.O. Ref VPRS - Unit - Position of file in box
File Cat. file category - i.e. section of Act, alphabetical code, year, etc.
Serial remaining part of file number
Dates date range
Parish/ Town Name parish, township or county; or other locality or subject information
Code parish, township or county code, if applicable. Codes assist with computer-sorting and checking of information/they are of little use for general reference
Allot, Sec Usually allotment and section; may instead contain a description of file contents.
Area area usually in acres, rods and perches; may instead contain description
Dist land district in which the land office administering the business of the file would have been located
The pages are arranged on the microfiche in vertical order.
The file entries are sorted according to locality (usually a parish or township), or according to other information when a specific locality is not relevant.
Definitions:- Victoria was divided into parishes for survey purposes. Townships, although located inside parishes, were surveyed separately. Within a parish or township, land is usually divided into sections, then allotments. A county is a larger survey unit comprising many parishes and townships. A land district is an administrative region, often encompassing parts of several counties.
Arrangement (i) Files relating to specific pieces of land are mostly listed under the relevant township or parish. The townships and parishes are arranged alphabetically. Where there is a township and parish with the same name, the township list (identified by a (T) before the township name) comes after the parish list.
(ii) Where a specific parish/township was not identifiable or not appropriate files have been listed under the county in which the land is located. The counties are arranged alphabetically.
(iii) Files with no recorded parish township or county are arranged in the following ways:
(a) Files with no land district and nothing in the "Parish/Town name" spaces : roughly grouped into series
(b) Files with no land district, but with a description of file contents in the "Parish/Town Name" spaces : roughly alphabetical arrangement according to the characters in the "Parish/Town Name" spaces.
