How to use the Records
This series has been digitised and is available online. Access to the digitised records is available via the physical records details pages.
Consult the Consignment Details List and order in the volumes covering the time period of interest. Turn to the alphabetical section covering the surname of the patient and locate the entry for the person of interest.
The Nominal Register can be used as means of establishing the date of admission of a patient, and hence locating patient information in :
VPRS 7397 Female Case Books (Kew Asylum)
VPRS 7398 Male Case Books (Kew Asylum)
VPRS 7419 Female Case Books (Children Cottages)
VPRS 7420 Male Case Books (Children Cottages)
Note : this series only covers patients discharged between c.1887 until 1906. Refer to VPRS 7690 Nominal Register of Patients for a complete index to patients at Kew Asylum.
Function / Content
This volume is a Nominal Register of Patients at the Kew Asylum and Children's Cottages. The Nominal Register was created to record the names of all patients on the books of the Asylum. Both patients in residence and those out on trial leave were included.
Details recorded are:
date of admission,
name of patient,
date of discharge/transfer/death.
Date Range
The register appears to have been commenced by 1887 because there are no patients listed who have been discharged, died or transferred before this date. No details where entered in the register beyond 1906. Though the register was not begun till 1887 it covered patients "on the books" at that time, some of whom were first admitted in 1871.
Recordkeeping System
The volume was arranged alphabetically by the patient's surname and then chronologically by date of admission within the alphabetical listings.
Relationship with VPRS 7690
It is not clear why a second Nominal Register was created to cover the period 1887 to 1906 as an index to patients for these years can be located in VPRS 7690/P1 units 3 and 4. VPRS 7690 does not, however, cover patients at the Children's Cottages.
File Note
It is possible that this series, along with VPRS 7423, VPRS 7426, VPRS 7427, and VPRS 7428 were actually created by the central agencies responsible for mental health eg. Lunacy Department VA 2864. This would explain the overlap between this series and VPRS 7690. Further research is required to establish/clarify this. MR December 16, 1992
