  • How to use the Records
This series has been digitised and is available online. Access to the digitised records is available via the physical records details pages.

Consult the Consignment Details List and order in the volume covering the time period of interest. Turn to the alphabetical section covering the surname of the patient and locate the entry for the person of interest.

  • Function / Content
This volume is the Nominal Register of Patients at the Ararat Asylum including J Ward, the ward for criminally insane patients. Patients admitted to the Asylum between October 1867 and June 1906 have their admission and discharge date recorded in this volume. The Nominal Register was created to record the names of all patients on the books of the Asylum. Both patients in residence and those out on trial leave were included.

    Details recorded are:

    - name of patient
    - date of admission
    - date of discharge and how discharged.

This volume could be used as an index to the following series if the date of admission of the patient is unknown:

VPRS 7401 Case Books of Female Patients,
VPRS 7403 Case Books of Male Patients

  • Recordkeeping System
This volume was self-indexing. It was primarily arranged alphabetically by the patient's surname and then chronologically by date of admission within the alphabetical listings.
