Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
This series has been digitised and is available online. Access to the digitised records is available via the physical records details pages.

The Nominal Register can be used as means of establishing the date of admission of a patient, and hence locating patient information in VPRS 7397, Case Books of Female Patients VPRS 7398, Case Books of Male Patients and VPRS 7693 Patient Clinical Notes.

Consult the Consignment Details List and order in the volume covering the time period of interest. Researchers should select the volume which covers the period they believe the patient was institutionalised. Turn to the alphabetical section covering the surname of the patient and locate the entry for the person of interest.

Researchers should note the access restrictions which apply to this series.

  • Function / Content
This series contains the nominal register of patients from the Kew Asylum (VA 2840)

A Nominal Register was created periodically at the Kew Asylum (from 1905 called Kew Hospital for the Insane and from 1934 called Kew Mental Hospital) to record the names of all patients on the books of the Asylum at a particular time. All patients, either in residence or on trial leave at the time the register was created were included. In addition, new patients were added to the register on admission until such time as an updated register was created. Therefore a patient who was at Kew for several years may appear in more than one register.

    Details recorded include :
    - the name of the patient,
    - date of admission (volumes 1 and 2 give only the year of admission),
date of discharge, death or transfer and the institution to which the patient was transferred.
    - for most entries an admission number is also provided.

    Relationship with VPRS 7425

It is not clear why a second Nominal Register was created to cover the period 1887 to 1906 as an index to patients for these years can be located in VPRS 7690/P1 units 3 and 4. VPRS 7690 does not, however, cover patients at the Children's Cottages.

  • Recordkeeping System
The volumes were arranged chronologically according to when they were created. The entries were arranged alphabetically by surname and within each alphabetical listing were arranged roughly chronologically by date of admission, although some discrepancies occur.

NB: Dates written on spines (units 1-5) appear to indicate the approximate date range of admissions found in the volumes, not the period over which the volume was used.
