This series consists of records relating to Melbourne Tramways employees who enlisted for Active Service during World War One. The series has been compiled by the Public Record Office and includes a bound list of employees on active service, and Tramway Board published rolls of honour which mostly includes references to employees of the Trust.
The bound list of employees is set out with employees and their details recorded in columns across a double page from left to right. Column entries record:
date of enlistment
full name age and marital status
position held and depot to which assigned
particulars of dependents and address of next-of-kin
rank and military unit and how service concluded eg. discharged, gassed, killed.
It appears likely that the list was compiled for the purpose of compensation for dependents of employees killed or invalided during the War.
The published lists comprise Tramway Board publications entitled List of Employees Enlisted for Active Service to 30 June, 1917 and List of Employees Enlisted for Active Service to 30 June, 1918 respectively.
It is thought that bound list was created in 1916 because most of its entries appear to have been simultaneously written although the first entries were for enlistments dated 1914. The last entries appear to have been made in 1919 when the employees either returned to work or resigned.
The published lists look to have been compiled from the information provided in the bound list although they lack the fine detail of the primary source. The date range of the bound list (1916-1919) extends beyond that of the second published list (1918) and consequently this list lacks some of the employee entries contained in the first.
