Description of this Series
Description of this Series
How to use the Records
For the file relating to a specific person, consult VPRS 5504 Register of the Articles of Clerkship for the number allocated at the time of registration and filing of articles with the Supreme Court.
Consult the Records Description List for the unit containing the number of the file required.
Function / Content
A person who planned to seek admission to practise as an attorney, solicitor and proctor was obliged to serve five years as an articled clerk and to file his articles in the Supreme Court within a certain time of entering into them. After the passing of the Legal Profession Practice Act 1891 all seeking admission to practise as barristers and solicitors were required to serve articles.
This series consists of the files relating to articled clerks who filed their articles, but were not ultimately admitted to practise. When the application was made for admission, articles were removed from the file in which they had been originally placed and were put on to the file relating to admission. Contents of the file consist primarily of the Articles of Agreement between the articled clerk and the person to whom they were articled.
Recordkeeping System
Files are arranged in numerical order. Each number is that allocated in VPRS 5504 Register of Articles of Clerkship.
