Range of Control Symbols
Series : 1877 to 1893 - 1906
Contents in Custody : There is no logical order apparent with respect to the way in which the volumes have been divided according to the various wharves or piers.
This series, maintained by the Melbourne Harbor Trust Commissioners from July 1877, consists of daily lists of vessels discharging and loading at various Harbor Trust and other wharves and piers within the Port of Melbourne.
The P1 consignment of this series comprises two volumes extant, the first unit of which demonstrates several developments in the system of arrangement of the information, as follows:
Unit 1:
Marked `1877' on the spine this volume commences 2 July 1877 and until September 1878 primarily relates to the Ann St., Pier at Williamstown although it includes occasional entries for Footscray and Yarraville wharves/piers. During this period a new page was started for each month and the entries, which were made in chronological order by date of vessel's arrival, included the following details:
date of arrival vessel's name tonnage berthed rig master's name loading berth date sailed.
For October 1878 the format changed to include additional details spread across two pages. These were:
length and draught of rig type of cargo (imports/exports/tonnage) length of pier whether loading or discharging remarks.
These entries related equally to wharves and piers at Williamstown, Yarraville, Footscray and in Hobson's Bay.
From November 1878 the details remained the same, however the lists were separated according to the wharves or piers at which the vessel was discharging or loading. Furthermore, although they were compiled chronologically, the lists for a particular wharf or pier over a period of time are not necessarily located consecutively within the volume. Hence it is necessary to search through the entire volume to follow a chronological sequence for a particular wharf/pier. There is no evidence of alphabetical arrangement by wharf/pier, neither is there an index to contents. The wharves/piers and the date ranges covered by this volume are as follows:
1886 Ann Street Pier, Williamstown ) November 1878 - December Harbor Trust Piers, Williamstown )
1886 Railway and Breakwater Piers, ) Williamstown ) November 1878 - December 1886 Government Piers, Williamstown )
1886 Hobson's Bay ) November 1878 - August 1886
Old Pier, Williamstown ) Steamboat Pier, Williamstown ) November 1878 - May 1881
1880 Graving Dock Pier, Williamstown ) November 1878 - November 1880
1886 Footscray Wharves and Piers ) November 1878 - December 1886
1886 Sugarworks, Yarraville ) November 1878 - December 1886
There were also regular tallies of the number, types and tonnage of cargo of the vessels according to each wharf or pier.
Unit 2:
This volume marked 1893 to 1906 on the spine, continues the same system of arrangement and includes the same entry details as in Unit 1. The lists in this volume cover January 1893 to March 1906. There are no lists extant for the period January 1887 to December 1892. It is not known whether volumes subsequent to 1906 once existed.
