  • How to use the Records
This series comprises a microfiche copy of a Register of Inward Shipping (Overseas and Intercolonial Ports) VPRS 22 Unit 29. The exact function of this record is not certain. It has been established, by cross checking against other related records, that the register records arrivals in the Port of Melbourne. However it is not known which of the various officials of the Department of Trade and Customs would have created the register.

The hardcopy register is part of a series (VPRS 22) which is an accumulation of records created between c. 1840 and c. 1890. It appears these records were created by officers with responsibility for the administration of immigration, ports and harbours and trade and customs functions. Overall responsibility for these functions lay with the Superintendent Port Phillip District to 1851 and subsequently the Department of Trade and Customs.

It is not clear why this register appears to be the only one of its type extant for this period as it was not until 1852, when Victoria became administratively independent of NSW, that there was a legislative requirement for ships' captains to maintain lists giving details of all passengers carried on vessels leaving British, foreign and intercolonial ports. The Inward Overseas Passenger Lists 1852-1923 (VPRS 947), held in the Public Record Office, are the accumulation of all those lists submitted to the Office of Customs in any Victorian port following the disembarkation of passengers.

The register records the arrival of ships in the Port of Melbourne between January 1846 and December 1852. It appears to record the arrival of all ships, whether from British, foreign or intercolonial ports, during this period.

Entries are listed chronologically by date of ship's arrival.

Basic information is given about each ship, its movements, passengers and cargo. Between January 1846 and October 1847 passengers are named. However it is not known how complete the lists are for each ship. When a distinction is made between cabin and steerage passengers the latter are rarely designated. The age, sex and nationality of passengers are not given.

From November 1847 until November 1851 the number of adults and children carried on each ship is registered but none are named. Between November 1851 and December 1852 the arrival of ships is registered and details are given of the ship and its cargo but passengers are not referred to.

While the amount of information about passengers changes over time the following information is given about each ship for the full period: the name of the master, the tonnage, the date of arrival, the date and port of departure, a description of the vessel and of the cargo.
