Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
The Index comprises fiche numbers 002-005 of a set which includes the microfiche copy of the Register (fiche 006-008 of the set).
    To use the Index-

    - Select the fiche which covers the appropriate section of the alphabet.

    - Now look for the name of the individual in whom you are interested.

    - If you find the name, note the ship's name, the fiche reference and page number - for example

    ship's name: 'Shamrock'

    fiche reference: M006

    page number: 39

M is a code for VPRS 8794 Register of Inward Shipping (Overseas and Intercolonial Ports) 1846 -1852 [Microfiche copy of VPRS 22
Unit 29], fiche 006-008 of this set.

006 is fiche number 6 of this set.

39 means the thirty ninth page of the Register.

What to Do if You Do not Find the Name You Are Looking for-

    - Try an alternate spelling. Clerks wrote down what they heard not what they saw, so try to imagine how the name would have been pronounced and what variant spellings there could be. For example-

Wyer becomes Dwyer or Wire or Wyre

In producing the index we may have incorrectly interpreted the clerk's handwriting and have further distorted the name. For example Wyer may be deciphered as Myer. When we were unsure we entered the name under variant spellings.

    - Check under maiden name for married women. It was not uncommon for married women accompanied by children to travel under their maiden name.

    - Remember that many families have Anglicised their names.

    - Note that in some instances certain categories of passenger are not named but are described in terms of occupation or status-

Miss Mc Millan and female servant
    Dr Dixon and family
    50 Exiles
    12 steerage passengers
    5 girls

    - Consult the Register even if the information given on the Index does not tally exactly with the information you already have. For example, clerks often made errors of transcription and passengers sometimes gave inaccurate information about their marital status.

  • Function / Content
This series comprises a microfiche copy of an Index to the Register of Inward Shipping (Overseas and Intercolonial Ports) VPRS 8794. The Index was first compiled on cards and later entered onto a database and output to the format microfiched.

The Index is an alphabetical arrangement of the family names of the passengers recorded in the Register between January 1846 and October 1847. The information provided on the index is the full name and title of each passenger, arrival date, ship name, port of departure, fiche reference for the register and the number of the page, in the register, on which each passenger's name appears.

The ships' captains are indexed for the full period, 1846 - 1852. The family names are interfiled with those of the passengers in the single alphabetical sequence.
