Description of this Series
Description of this Series
How to use the Records
1. Consult the Index to VPRS 907 Examination Papers, Board of Teachers Men or Women available in the reading room. Note the number or numbers given for a specific individual.
2. Consult the Records Description List for the unit containing the range within which that number falls.
Function / Content
Prior to initial appointment and for promotion to a higher classification, teachers were examined by an Inspector to determine their level of academic knowledge and competency as a teacher. This series consists of the reports by Inspectors forwarded to the Board of Education. A pro forma was completed giving the teachers name, school and position, the date of examination, the Inspectors recommendation and the result gained by the teacher in the examinations taken in a standard list of subjects. This was then signed by the Inspector.
These pro forma are enclosed in cover sheets which give the date of the correspondence, the date of its registration and the registration number (see VPRS 938 Register of Inward Correspondence, Annual Single Number System) and the subject of the piece of correspondence. These cover sheets are annotated with the Inspectors recommendation and notes of any other enclosures. Where the teacher had a previous examination report this was also included with the latest one. Other correspondence may be from the teacher or may be certificates of moral character(references) for that teacher.
Recordkeeping System
The records are arranged in consecutive number order which is roughly chronological. Where papers with a particular number are missing they may be found on a later record for the same person, generally when an examination was retaken due to earlier failure.
There is an index, divided by gender, available to this series. This index gives the family name and given name of the teacher, school number and name where applicable and the number of the examination report.
