  • How to use the Records
    How to Use this Series

    Sales of particular properties are listed under street names. The register is arranged by street names in alphabetical order.

    Look under the desired street name in the register, and scan the entries for the street number of the property.

    Function / Contents

    The register was probably compiled by the City Valuer's Department to keep abreast of property market values in the City of Melbourne.

    The information recorded in the register included: date, ward number, vendor, name of purchaser, description of property, measurements, sale price, and price per foot.

    System of Arrangement and Control

    The contents of the register were arranged by street name in alphabetical order. Within each street, sales were registered in chronological order as they occurred.

    Only one register was transferred to the Public Record Office in 1994. It is not known if any other such registers were created.

    Related Records

    Property values ascertained by the Council were recorded in VPRS 8915 Valuation Field Books.

    Council rates are based on property values. See VPRS 5708 Rate Books.
