How to Use this Series
The microfiche are arranged in alphabetical order by surname of architect.
The information on each frame on the microfiche includes the following: name of architect, register (or notice) number, date, address, builder, owner, architect, and brief description of building or work.
Please note: The architects names on the microfiche range from Beswicke to Young. The first two fiche in the series are missing; they were not transferred to the Public Record Office.
To search for architects whose names would come before Beswicke in alphabetical order, see VPRS 9463 Burchett Index: Notices of Intention to Build (Microfiche).
Function / Content
It would appear that this index (to architects) was adapted by Winston Burchett from the Burchett Index, the full title of which is Index of Notices of Intent to Build lodged with Melbourne City Council from 1850 to 1916. New buildings and major works (see VPRS 9463 Burchett index: Notices of Intention to Build (Microfiche)). It was compiled by Winston Burchett between the years 1980 and 1982 from original documents, building registers and contemporary directories. The original notices of intent to build may be found in VPRS 9288 Notices of Intention to Build
Information from the aforementioned sources was transferred on to index cards under the following headings: register (or notice) number, date, address, builder, owner, architect, and brief description of building or work. The typewritten index cards were then microfiched.
Not every Notice of Intention to Build is covered by The Burchett Index, only those which relate to what have been described as new buildings and major works, not those which relate to the construction of privies, or chimneys or the like. The Burchett Index is not a facsimile of the series (VPRS 9288 Notices of Intention to Build), but a valuable reference tool which will satisfy many research inquiries. The Index to Architects and the Burchett Index should be used whenever possible in preference to VPRS 9288 because of the fragile nature of the original documents.
Date Range
Series: 1980 to 1982 Contents: 1850 to 1916
The dates of the creation of the series and details of the sources used for the information to be found on the index are given in the first frame on the first microfiche in VPRS 9463 (Burchett Index).
System of Arrangement and Control
As mentioned above, the notices on microfiche are arranged in alphabetical order by surname of architect. The names included range go from Beswicke to Young.
There are 30 fiche in total. The microfiche numbers range from 3 to 32.
Most of the information found on the index was obtained from VPRS 9288 Notices of Intention to Build. Notices of intention to build were registered in chronological order by date of notice (see VPRS 9289 Building Notices Registers). From the register each notice was given a single number. The notices are filed in registered number order, which is also chronological order. In the early years the numbering began with 1 (one) at the start of each new year; in later years the numbering ran on from one year to the next.
Consignments in this Series
Each consignment is a complete set of microfiche. The information is the same in each consignment. P1: has been designated as the reproduction master in the absence of a master set of fiche. This consignment is Closed to public access under Public Records Act 1973, s. 11. The duplicates, P2, P3 and P4, have been given separate consignment numbers for ease of control by Repository (location, etc.).
