** Further research is required to determine the exact purpose and context of this series **

This series comprises a self-indexing, chronological record of ship arrivals at Victorian ports. Monitoring of shipping arrivals for customs and immigration purposes was undertaken by the Victorian Government from 1839 until responsibility for these functions passed to the Commonwealth Government in 1901 and 1924 respectively.

It is possible to search by the name of the ship within the span of years covered by each volume. Ships are not listed in strict alphabetical order.

Entries in the volumes comprise the following details:

    date of ship's arrival
    tonnage
    name of ship
    name of ship's master
    port sailed from.

It is not known whether earlier volumes were created. For the period 1839 to 1900 consult VPRS 3504 Inwards Shipping Index [Microfilm Copy of VPRS 13].

NOTE: Units 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D were wrongly attributed to this series.
