Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
The best way to locate files in this series is to consult the Records Description List in which the records are listed by file number and file title.

  • Function / Content
It is thought that the records transferred to the Public Record Office constitute only a fragment of a larger series. The location of any other files was not known at the time of transfer (1995).

Much of the correspondence that remains is related to the abandonment of the tramways at Bendigo and Ballarat and the maintenance of the service until the service was closed.

These files were created by the Electricity Supply and the Marketing and Distribution Departments.

  • Recordkeeping System
The records in this series were registered in the Supply Registry system. They are arranged in an alpha-numeric sequence, e.g., T0-3, T0-4, etc. The letter T appears to stand for Tramways, the 0 (zero) for General and 3 stands for A.T. & M.O.E.A. (Australian Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees Association). This represents three levels of headings: primary, secondary and tertiary.

This constitutes a multi-tiered classification system in which files on different aspects of a subject or activity (e.g., tramways, workshops, etc.) are registered and stored together.

Such recordkeeping systems usually include a list of Authorised File Headings (or Classifications) and files are registered under these headings in a Register of Files. Name, precedent and other indexes are often created to assist with the retrieval of specific files. However as at November 1995, no such control records for these files could be located.

Very few records in this series still remain. The fate of the remainder is unknown. Cross-references from the previous series (VPRS 9816 Classified Subject Correspondence files (Supply Registry)) to this series provide evidence of a greater range of alpha-numeric headings than are included in the series in custody.

These records do not appear to have been included in the SEC Archives.
